** SSGT Russell Crawford served as a Staff Sergeant. Having actually gone "Missing" on or about October 18, 1944, he was not officially declared by the military as being dead until March 7, 1946.
Russell served as a Staff Sergeant & Gunner on B-24J #44-40540, 424th Bomber Squadron, 307th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He resided in Leslie County, Kentucky prior to the war.
He enlisted in the Army on August 6, 1943 in Huntington, West Virginia. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in the fabrication of metal products and also as Single, without dependents.
B-24J #44-40540 took off, with a crew of 10, from Morotai, North Maluku Province, Indonesia on a bombing mission over Balikpapan island in Borneo. They were seen going into a heavy weather front that was causing heavy icing on the other B-24's on this mission. After coming out of the front they were seen going down toward the sea. It is believed that the icing may have caused them to crash.
Russell was declared "Missing In Action" on this mission during the war.
He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
