**Fred Barnes, S/SGT, U.S. Army, WW ll, Purple Heart, Staff Sergeant, Sixth Infantry, First Armored Division, 27th Field Artillery Battalion, 16th. Engineer Battalion ( Armored) , Company G. Reported “Missing in Action“ on Sunday, November 8, 1942,on the first day of Operation Torch, the allied invasion of North Africa as a member of the Center Task Force, while aboard the troop transport HMS Walney or HMS Hartland in Oran Harbor, Algeria. Memorialized at the North Africa American Cemetery, Carthage, Tunis, Tunisia, Posthumously awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. U.S. Army correspondence data October 1947 indicates the body may have been recovered and is buried at the North African American Cemetery, rather than “Lost at Sea” as originally designated.
