** MANUEL COUCH (1917 - 1945), DIED OF WOUNDS, IWO JIMA, WORLD WAR II.

ENLISTMENT DATE: January 12, 1944.

DISCHARGE DATE: 17 March 1945. DISCHARGED BY DEATH: 17 March 1945. IWO JIMA WWII. Died of Wounds, World War II. Purple Heart Medal.

Manuel was working for Blue Diamond Coal company in Perry Co. He had such a strong conviction about serving his country he left his job and told his wife and young son which was 8 1/2 goodbye. He went to Cincinnati, Ohio and enlisted. After enlisting he was given $11.00 and out in a train and given two weeks to report to San Diego, California. he served in the 3rd Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment as a PFC. He was wounded by the gas from a flame thrower and burned severely. He was taken to a hospital ship where he lived for 3 days. Manuel’s grandson, Curtis Douglas Couch, is in the United States Marine Band. At the 50th year of the Battle of Iwo Jima he stood on top of the hill that his grandfather had died on and played TAPS.
